Getting advice from a food expert, either a nutritionist, dietitian, or for a lower cost a food app may help jump start your healthy eating habits and lead you to reach your weight goals.
First, it’s important to understand the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian. In some states, someone can call themselves a “nutritionist” without any qualifications or certifications. A registered dietitian (R.D.) must have at least a bachelor’s degree with specific coarse work and training in nutrition. They also must pass a board test and attend continuing education classes to keep their status.
If you can’t afford one-on-one help from a certified professional, a phone or computer app such as My Fitness Pal or SparkPeople can help you keep track of your daily meals. Also, nutritional coaches, like myself, can offer support and information.
If you choose the help of a professional nutrition counselor, you should ask your doctor or HMO for a reference. Many insurance companies will cover this expense as a preemptive health coverage opportunity. Try to keep an accurate, honest food diary for 2 weeks before any appointment to assist the counselor in giving you the best health and food advice. Inform them of all medications and OTC supplements you may be taking as well so they understand your total health picture. Generate any food prep, healthy cooking and calorie total questions in advance. An hour appointment will fly by if you are not prepared.
