Every time you walk into a grocery store you are bombarded with magazines touting the “Diet of the month” or the magic supplement that will literally MELT body fat in 2 weeks. We have all seen them and most of us have bought them, in the hopes of finding that magic bullet that will allow us to eat anything that we like and stay slim. News Flash!! There is no magic bullet or perfect diet that works for everyone! Having been a Registered Dietitian for over 20 years, I have worked with hundreds of clients and one thing I have learned is that no two people are the same, consequently no diet could possibly be perfect for everyone! That being said, there are a couple of general concepts that ring true for most people and gradually working them into your lifestyle will greatly improve your health:
- Cut back on processed, refined foods filled with preservatives, food colors and chemicals. Follow the 5 INGREDIENT RULE -check the label and stick with fresh whole foods with ingredients you can pronounce!
- Cut back on sugar in all forms apart from natural sugars found in fruits and veggies. I tell my clients sugar by any other name is still sugar as it is processed the same in our body. Research has shown that sugar is more addictive than cocaine in rats. Taste buds adapt over time to less sugar and suddenly you will be tasting the natural sweetness of the food rather than the added sugar!
- Eat a rainbow everyday! Colorful fruits and veggies are chock full of fiber, nutrients, phytocemicals and more! Attempt to get as much nutrition as you can from food and use supplements as a back-up! Nutrients from foods are absorbed better in most cases and they TASTE GOOD!!
- Lifestyle over diets! DIE ts don’t work over the long term unless we are able to incorporate them into our life forever! Food is suppose to be pleasurable! Forcing yourself to follow a plan that is not enjoyable is a sure fire way to set yourself up for failure!
BABY STEPS! Small changes over a period of time add up to big changes but can be far less overwhelming!
Make sure to incorporate enough lean healthy protein into your day! Many people, especially women, skimp on the protein to save calories! Eating lean healthy protein throughout the day will help maintain a healthy blood sugar which in turn will help decrease cravings and keep your metabolism chugging away!
Changes that you make today, will help to decrease your chances of developing chronic conditions later in life!
