Why You Need To Have A Candid Conversation With Your Doctor

When you go to see your physician for a check-up, or to address a problem you have, a candid conversation is more important than you may give credence to. Why?

-If your doctor asks you about your smoking or drinking habits, they are not prying into your social life, but the frequency of cigarette and alcohol use can affect birth control side effects (increases risks of cancer). Which kind they may recommend can impact your sinus issues, increase your risk of stroke, affect the development of heart and lung disease, and an extended list of gastrointestinal and memory issues.

-When the doctor asks you about your diet or food patterns, and you aren’t candid with the information, it can keep your physician from truly understanding your health risks for a number of different kinds of cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. Also, if you don’t tell them about cleanses or ‘detox’ treatments that you’ve done (which can interfere with kidney function and protein levels), they may misread test results. This can lead them to make misinformed recommendations to you.

-If you’re not forthright about your sexual habits, this can lead to a lack of important tests for a variety of life-changing issues.

-If you’re embarrassed to talk about gastrointestinal problems, then the doctor can’t make accurate recommendations. A large percentage of people with this problem are women (I am in this group). According to Robynn Chutkan, MD. (Founder of The Digestive Center for women at Georgetown Hospital in D.C.), the colon is so long and twisting, it makes it hard for food to get through effectively. Being frank with your doctor allows them to recommend a proper diet. They may also recommend a scheduling a colonoscopy.

-Don’t give misinformation about dietary supplements and vitamins. They can have negative drug interactions with a drug that is prescribed to you.

Being forthright with your doctor, even if it is embarrassing, serves you best in the long run. It allows the doctor to make accurate diagnoses, and to help you find our best health.

8 oz. green vegetables (raw or steamed) asparagus, broccoli, green beans, broccoli slaw (88 cal.)

1 glass Merlot (100 cal.)
